1 Parts of speech part 1 – instructions
The purpose of this activity is to reinforce parts of speech with the students, so they can identify what is a verb, noun etc. Firstly, tutors should discuss the parts of speech on the next slide with the group – can they come up with further examples? In pairs, students should find at least two examples of each. Who can find the most? Students then have to feed back their findings to the rest of the class, who need to decide whether the example is correct or not. Students should be encouraged to justify their answers. Part two puts the parts of speech into practice

2 Parts of speech Noun = a word which names something (e.g. Coalville, John, table, pen) Verb = a doing / action word (e.g. to run, to eat, to speak, to think, to be, to have) Adjective = a word that describes a noun (e.g. red, blue, big, expensive, clever, sad) Adverb = a word that describes a verb, these often end “ly” (e.g. quickly, happily, cheerfully, sadly) Pronoun = these replace a noun and come before a verb (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) Article = these always come before a noun (definite ‘the’ or indefinite ‘a’) Preposition = a word that describes the position, place or time of an object (eg at, in, under, before)

3 Pair work… Find: Noun Verb Adjective Adverb Pronoun Article Preposition What Harry feared most was that he might not be able to find the mirror again. With Ron covered in the cloak too, they had to walk much more slowly the next night. The tried retracing Harry’s route from the library, wandering around the dark passageways for nearly an hour. “I’m freezing”, said Ron. “Let’s forget it and go back”. “No!”, hissed Harry. “I know it’s here somewhere.” They passed the ghost of a tall witch gliding eerily in the opposite direction, but saw no one else. Just as Ron started moaning that his feet were dead with cold, Harry spotted the suit of armour. “It’s here – just here, yes!” They pushed the door open. Harry dropped the cloak from round his shoulders and ran to the mirror. They were there. His mother and father beamed at the sight of him.
