1 Properties in Math

2 Math 6 Properties! Associative Property Commutative Property Changing the order of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum or product 6+4= ∙ 3 = 3 ∙ 2 a + b = b + a a ∙b = b ∙ a Changing the grouping of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum of the product (2+7)+3=2+(7+3) (2∙4)∙5=2(4∙5) (a+b)+c=a+(b+c) (ab)c=a(bc) Identity Property The sum of any number and zero is the original number(additive identity). The product of any number and 1 is the original number(multiplicative Identity) Distributive Property Substitution Property The distributive property of multiplication over addition and subtraction help to evaluate expressions that have a number multiplying a sum or a difference. 9(4+5)=9(4)+9(5) 5(8-2)=5(8)-5(2) A(b+c)=ab + ac a(b-c)= ab-ac (you get the same answer when you multiply a number by a group of numbers added together or subtracted as when you do each multiplication separately)
