What are properties? Properties are characteristics of a substance just like hair color, skin color, height, weight, finger prints are characteristics of people.

Properties are characteristics of a substance that are used to:
Identify an unknown substance Distinguish one substance from another Characterize a newly discovered substance Predict the usefulness of a substance for a specific application SEE PAGE 99

Physical vs. Chemical Property
Physical Property can be observed without changing the identity of the substance Chemical Property describes the ability of a substance to undergo changes in identity

Physical Property Chemical Property reactivity with oxygen, bromine, hydrogen, etc. Some properties of substances are color, taste, smell, melting point, boiling point, density, specific gravity.

Physical Process changes the form of a substance without changing its identity Chemical Process changes the identity of the substance with subsequent changes in properties
