2. What Are Mangroves?
A habitat in the intertidal zone that grows on the edge of where a rainforest meets an ocean.

3. Location
Mangroves are located in or around saltwater and protected coastlines
Mainly located between latitudes 25°N and 25°S

4. Features Soil has high levels of salinity
Species must be able to withstand broad ranges of salinity, temperature, and moisture
Mangroves protect coastal areas from hurricanes. Erosion, tidal surge, and tsunamis

5. Climate Rainfall is between 50-500 mm per year
Rainy season is between July and October
Temperature ranges from 22°C to 35°C
Temperatures are the highest in April and lowest in July

6. Seasonal Information
The best time to visit is during the dry season, which varies from place to place.
The best time to view the wildlife is in the morning when it isn’t too hot or moist and there are far fewer mosquitoes.

7. Unique Features
Unlike other biomes, mangrove forests grow on the shores or in shallow bodies of salt water.
Also present in the mangrove biome are vital coastal ecosystems that keep the entire shoreline community and shoreline intact.

8. Plant Characteristics

9. Animal Characteristics
Fish, shrimp, and oysters live among the mangrove roots
Nesting ground for hundreds of species of birds
An endangered species known as the hawksbill turtle lives in mangroves.

10. Plant Adaption Mangrove Trees
Aerial roots hold trunk and leaves above the waterline
Specialized seeds that are tough and float allowing them to travel great distances

11. Animal Adaption Cassiopeia Jellyfish Harbor endosymbiotic algae
The mangrove roots supply a filtration system that clears out the silt and other agents that would cloud the water and kill the invertebrates.
