1 Canned food seemed like a wonderful invention but when housewives in the 1800s opened cans of meat, they weren’t always very pleased. Often the meat inside tasted like anything but real meat. 3 People knew that if food is kept cool it lasts longer than food that is kept at room temperature. Many inventors tried to come up with an idea for making enough artificial ice to keep food cool. In 1877, German inventor, Karl von Linde finally came up with a useful idea and made the first successful refrigeration machine. He went on to sell 12,000 machines. 4 Refrigerators kept food cool but it was the invention of freezers that really made a difference and meant that food could be kept fresh for much longer. Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show In 1873, James Harrison won a gold medal at an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia by proving that meat kept frozen for months was safe to eat. SAMPLE SLIDE

SAMPLE SLIDE He realised that the fish tasted good to eat because it had frozen instantly. It had frozen instantly because it was so cold in that part of Canada and, because the fish had frozen so quickly, no ice crystals had formed to spoil the food.
