Water for living Year 11 Senior Science
2
Interesting facts about water
Water has a high heat capacity. Heat capacity means how much heat energy is needed to increase the temperature. It take a lot of heat energy to change water’s temperature. Water can absorb a lot of heat without changing temperature. This allows water to regulate the Earth’s climate by limiting large temperature changes.
3
How much water does the Earth have?
72% of Earth is water
4
So we have lots of water?
5
Our water budget There’s only a limited amout of water on Earth
6
Australia’s water budget
Highlands in Papua New Guinea limits rain from the north Australia is the driest continent on Earth Great Dividing Range limits rain from the east Very cold currents and winds from Antarctica limits rain from the south
7
Society needs to control its water supply
Humans used to get their water from rivers but now these river systems are disturbed by: Run off from farms Irrigation from farms Dams Re-routing of rivers
8
What is threatening our supply of water?
A growing population More people = more water needed More people = more food needed = more water needed to grow food Water pollution Climate change
9
What can YOU do … In this topic you will learn about how people control water systems so that you can contribute to solving some of the water problems in the future. In this topic, “Water for living” you will learn about: Why water is important for living things (Biology) Why water is important for the environment (Earth & Environmental Science/Geography) How water is polluted (Chemistry) How water pollution can be fixed (Chemistry) How water quality can be monitored (Biology/Chemistry)
