What’s the Purpose? TO INFLUENCE: Emotions Opinions Attitudes Behavior TO PERSUADE: To believe in something To do something TO BENEFIT: Someone (and that someone may not be you!) Where do we see it? 1. Commercials, 2. News Programs, 3. Advertisements…

So what is it? The word PROPAGANDA refers to any technique that attempts to influence the opinions, emotions, attitudes, or behavior of a group in order to benefit the sponsor. The techniques of propaganda are used every day: -military, -media, -advertising, -politics, -and all sorts of human relationships. To protect yourself against the techniques of propaganda, three good questions to ask yourself are: Who does this benefit? Why did they do that? According to whom?

What works on you? Think of your favorite advertisement. Describe it.
What elements of the ad made you want to buy the product/contribute to the cause/ spread the word? Try it on me. Create an ad that you think I would be swayed by.

Card Stacking -uses facts and figures to show one side as positive and the other as negative -shows bias (favor) to the advertised product/idea -designed to make you THINK you are hearing/seeing both sides, but you are only hearing one perspective Plain Folks -shows that the person/product is “just like you” -often used in politics
11
Transfer -uses your feelings about one thing to get you to feel the same way about the promoted product person -uses a positive image to persuade you to like something OR a negative image to dissuade you -the image might be symbolic, like an American flag standing for freedom

MAYCOMB HERO FOR PRESIDENT!
You are a team of political advisors for the upcoming 2016 Elections. You must create a political campaign for your candidate. The candidates, however, are not political figures. You will be representing a character from To Kill a Mockingbird. This is a two part assignment-the first part is to create a political poster or advertisement using concrete examples or quotes from the book to showcase your candidate, along with some sort of visual. The second part is to write, produce and share a campaign commercial. This 90-second commercial must be written in the voice of the character and use the acts of generosity or heroism we have seen in the book as “past good deeds” your candidate has committed in order to persuade people to give them their vote.
