1 Monday: October 27, 2014 ATTENDANCE Meet your Science Circle
What IS a Science Circle? PRACTICAL application EXIT SLIP! GOAL: Collaborate with a team in order to achieve scientific learning. OBJECTIVE: Discuss & Elect your group members’ role for this week.

2 Pride in self and product
Purpose: Work as groups to develop a deeper understanding of biology and promote a supportive work environment and strong work ethic. Scientists can not do their jobs on their own. It takes many hands to achieve great results. We are going to form into scientific circles so that our creativity and intelligence can shine through! Pride in self and product

There is no “I” in team. In soccer, football, volleyball, and other teams; every player has to be in sync and coordinated with one another. When people try to hog the ball or play the game by themselves, EVERYONE loses. They lose the opportunity to feel the adrenaline pumping as they take possession or pass the ball. They are robbed of camaraderie and the joy of being part of something larger than themselves. The same is true in this room. When YOU choose to take over and “just get it done.” You have stolen learning not only from your team, but yourself. Each of us have different talents and thought processes. When we form a collective thought there is much more depth and insight, then if we do it alone. That being said. You also fail for the team when you choose to do nothing. ALL of you are a collective whole and will receive a grade as such. Smart Alec comments? Already covered 

4 Weekly Roles: Discussion Director: As you read, write ideas or questions that your group might want to discuss. Science Translator: As you read, look for new science words. Write the page number, the word, and the definition. Share your findings with the group. Fact Finder: Find out information about the ideas in the book. You can use other books and the internet to find out more information. Illustrator. Summarizer: Summarize the main ideas in the reading and draw a picture to help your team understand what they are investigating. Students will read & discuss the roles. They will democratically decide HOW to divide the roles for the week.

5 GRADING AS A TEAM: Effort, not ability. Some of us are fabulous artists, note-takers, or quick at understanding things. Others are NOT. You will grade people honestly based on how HARD they tried…even if they didn’t quite get it. Attitude. BAD Attitudes rain down like cows peeing on a flat rock. Leave your issues at the door. When you are in this class, you are a scientist bent on learning. Get excited about what you are doing and class becomes much more enjoyable and productive. Productivity. Your team can’t complete what needs to be done without you giving it your all. Everyone works. Everyone Drives. Everyone GETS IT DONE. Team Work: Are you being a: Team Player Know it all, I can do a better job then you snot, OR an Anchor dragging everyone under to drown? On Friday, each of you will grade your team members anonymously on their: SEE Above.

6 EXIT SLIP!!!! INDIVIDUALLY:
TEAM: THIS is your Team’s commitment to one another. List of your team’s roles. Why are each of you in these roles? What skills are you bringing to the role? Goal: What grade are you choosing to receive as a team? INDIVIDUALLY: For each of your team members, state one asset they bring to your circle. What are you bringing to your group? What grade are you prepared to work for? IF you are truly struggling with your science circle, you need to let me know. I am not here to settle itty-bitty squabbles, I am not your parent. I AM here to solve serious issues such as: individuals refusing to work, or share the work; inappropriate behavior that the team can’t deal with together; and personal issues that you can’t work through with your team.
