Funded by MCCSS under its Adult Non-Credit ESL service Free language training service to all who qualify Available across Ontario

69 eligible learners 51 fully independent (74%) 18 blended (26%) 68% female, 32% male April 1, 2018 – October 31, 2018 143 eligible learners served 76 learners exited 55 learners active, 12 in assessment 62% female, 38% male

4 Eligibility Rules Must be eligible for Adult Non-Credit ESL To qualify: You must be an adult immigrant residing in Ontario Your first language must not be English You must be 18 years old or have completed your high school diploma You must not be enrolled in any publically supported day school in Ontario, and;

You must be a Canadian citizen (not born in Canada), permanent resident, Convention refugee or a refugee claimant, or Provincial nominee, or their dependant, who has been approved through the Opportunities Ontario Provincial Nominee Program but has not yet been processed to receive permanent resident status, or A temporary foreign worker, or their dependant, who has been approved through the Canadian Experience Class but has not yet been processed to receive permanent resident status; or An approved foreign domestic worker admitted under the Live-in Caregiver program. *QUALIFICATIONS from Schedule “C” of the Signed Funding Agreement dated November 30, 2009.

Scheduling conflict Maternity leave Health issues Special needs Lack of transportation/childcare Accessibility/Availability … If you want to supplement classroom ESL learning If online learning is your preference You must have a working address + some proficiency using a computer.

7 Learning Learners can work independently online “anytime”
Primarily, asynchronous learning (self-directed) Through Moodle learning platform With support from assigned online instructor Plus: Scheduled online sessions (face-to-face) Tutorials with assigned online instructor Scheduled, online group sessions (F2F) As supplement to self-directed learning Coffee break chat/discussion format, with other learners, facilitator

8 Curriculum Courses are at CLB Levels 1-5
Courses are thematic in nature Include Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing activities Include Portfolio Based Language Assessments (PBLA)

9 Course Layout Each course is laid out with an Introduction, followed by numbered module topics Introduction contains proposed course outcomes

10 Module Topics - in 3 sections
Learn It – Skill-building activities/resources To teach the topic subject and vocabulary Use books, presentations, charts, videos, audio… Practise It – Skill-using activities/resources To practise what was learned Use multiple choice, drag & drop, matching, sequencing, fill in the blanks, flashcards… Assessment – A “real world task” To test how well the lessons were learned and can be applied to real life situations (PBLA) Includes Marking Rubric and Self Assessment

11 Learner Tools Moodle “messenger” feature Grades E-Portfolio
Learners can message instructors directly from their course and receive responses in real time. (If instructor is not online the message is directed to their address.) Grades Learners can see how they are doing in each course by viewing a Grades Report. E-Portfolio AMDSB is currently investigating how this would work with Anytime ESL program.
