Age of Discovery Portugal first to begin long voyages of exploration, starting in 1420 with Prince Henry the Navigator. Da Gama- Portugal Sailor, Discovers trade route to India, highly profitable. Caravels- ships that were more maneuverable and could carry cannon and goods

Age of Discovery Astrolabe- used the sun or a star to determine ship’s latitude. Compass shows direction. Caravel and astrolabe make long voyages possible. Christopher Columbus- Spanish discoverer of America, but went to his grave believing he had found a sea route to Asia. Mercantilism- idea that success and prosperity of a nation relied on wealth from its colonies

Age of Discovery Plantations- Large agricultural estates set up along the coast of Brazil and islands of the Caribbean. Treaty of Tordesillas- signed in 1494 between Spain and Portugal, Portugal had rights to explore to the East (Africa) and Spain to the West (Americas).

Age of Discovery Goals- Gold, God, Glory Gold- wealth through trade
God- spread Christian religion Glory- for prestige of home countries Cartography- art and science of mapmaking, Arab navigators had drawn usually charts for exploration. Magellan- first explorer credited with circumnavigating the globe.

Age of Discovery Nationalism- a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries
