1 SAFRR: Science Application for Risk Reduction
NATURAL HAZARDS MISSION AREA Earthquake Hazards Program 150th Anniversary of the 1868 Hayward fault earthquake Earthquake Country Alliance Cisco, San Jose, March 1, 2018 Opportunity Ideas Messages Partners Jack Boatwright, Tom Brocher, Susan Garcia, Scott Haefner, Keith Knudsen, Jim Lienkaemper, David Schwartz

2 1868 “the great San Francisco earthquake”
Magnitude 6.8 30 fatalities, 5 in San Francisco (7th most lethal California earthquake) Extensive damage in San Leandro, Hayward, and Fremont (total population less than 2000—now is over 500,000) Bay Area population was 260,000 (at 7 million, it is now 27 times larger) ShakeMap 1868 earthquake was called the great San Francisco earthquake until 1906 1868 ShakeMap by Jack Boatwright and Howard Bundock of the USGS, based on work by Toussan Toppozada of the Calif. Geol. Survey Diamonds show locations where intensity reports were made USGS OFR

3 Haywards Hotel, Haywards, 1860s
Society of California Pioneers Haywards Hotel, Haywards, 1860s View east towards Hayward before the 1868 Earthquake, showing how few people lived there at the time Population of Hayward in 1870 was 500 inhabitants, today there are 140,000, over 277 times more residents Hayward Fault runs across photo near base of the escarpment below Hayward Hotel Hayward was heavily damaged by the 1868 earthquake. “Practically not a house was left on its foundations…” “Many buildings were much damaged.” (Lawson Report, 1908).

4 2nd Alameda Co. Courthouse, San Leandro
Society of California Pioneers “At San Leandro the shock was more sensibly felt than at any other point on that side of the Bay. All the buildings were terribly shaken, adobes were thrown to the ground, brick structures, and even frame buildings were demolished. The Court House and County Jail were shaken down.” San Francisco Morning Call, 22 Oct. 1868

6 The 1868 quake impacted building design in the Bay Area through 1906

7 Memorial Park, Hayward:
Hayward Fault offsets construction all along the East Bay

8 ◊11= this cartoon shows ages of the 12 southern Hayward earthquakes with 95-percentile error ranges shown in light pink ◊ The orange line represents a linear regression fit of these ages. The mean recurrence interval of 161 ± 65 yr gives a coefficient of variation of 0.40, suggesting a fairly regular process ◊ In the next slide, I compare these earthquake ages to some paleoearthquake records from nearby faults SUMMARY: 12-EVENT

10 Assistance from partners:
Publications to highlight Web site content & events Messaging expertise Media event ideas Brainstorming

11 Some potential themes:
Encourage retrofits or replacements by showcasing retrofit or rebuilt buildings or infrastructure Encourage preparedness Tell the story of what happened in 1868 Education about post seismic slip, ShakeAlert, aftershocks

12 Important Dates to Remember
Your Mom’s birthday HayWired rollout – Wednesday, April 18 Shakeout – Thursday, October 18 Media events – Friday, October 19 th anniversary – Sunday, October 21 Other events – spread over weeks/months leading up to anniversary Election day, Tuesday November 6
