The War Begins Austria-Hungary (alliance with Germany)–declared war on Serbia. Russia (alliance with Serbia)- agreed to protect Serbia- Russia declared war on Germany Germany-knowing France and Russia are allies-declares war on France. The Alliances cause the war to spread rapidly & dragged all of Europe into the war. American remained on the sidelines
