Making Connections – linking a character, experience or event from a text to the reader’s experience, another text or to what is happening in the world. I was making connections to the world in Boy’s Life. The main character was growing up in a world where you were an outcast if you didn’t have a bike and that was like what happened in my childhood during the 1960’s. Prediction – After considering the characters and events, the foretelling of what will happen next in a story. By analyzing the events of the book so far, I’m making a prediction that Corey in Boy’s Life will solve the murder and save his father. If he doesn’t I will disappointed. Inference - the process of arriving at some conclusion that is not actually written in the text. “Reading between the lines”. Even though it is not written in the text, I am making the inference that Corey’s father in Boy’s Life is in danger of losing his sanity because the ghost of the murdered man keeps haunting him in his sleep. Visualization - to form mental images or pictures of characters, settings and events from reading the text. I am using visualization whenever I read. Right now I am reading Boy’s Life and in my head I can see Cory’s new red bicycle with it’s horn and metal basket. Summarization – a complete retelling of what has been previously read to include all the important main ideas and details. My retelling of the plot in Boy’s Life would include a summarization of how Corey and his dad came into contact with a murder and how it affected them both. Questioning – a inquiry to investigate problems, motive or events in a story or text that leads to better understanding. When I didn’t understand why Corey’s dog was alive even though he wasn’t eating, I used questioning, by asking myself, “How could this happen?” Later on, the text explained that Corey magically prayed him alive.
