Communication is a PROCESS
ENVIRONMENT Sender Discuss the parts briefly and show the arrows that make it a “process” , indicate barriers like noise, and other distractions – next slide has short video clip that describes it in detail!

Barriers Barriers- specific items that can distort or prevent communication within an organization. What barriers were portrayed in the video? What could have been done to make the discussion easier to follow? How would you have handled a conversation like this? Tell them words, and even nonverbal cues can be misconstrued and miscommunication takes place.

Men and women communicate differently

Nonverbal Communication
93% of what we communicate with others is nonverbal: our tone of voice, pitch, our posture, facial expressions and gestures! Choose 1: (friends) What are some benefits to being aware of body language while working in a group setting? (For the birds) What was this story about? Was it happy or sad? How do you know?

Assertiveness Assertiveness- the quality of being self-assured and confident without being aggressive, mean, or rude. Assertiveness is an important part of communication! Well Cast- How to Be More Assertive What does assertiveness mean? Is being assertive a good or bad thing? Why or why not? How does understanding the communication process help you be more assertive on the job or in the classroom? If you have a problem or concern it’s important to make it known to the group in order to keep communication open.

Communication Discussion
Why is understanding all kinds of communication (verbal, written and nonverbal) important for you to be aware of as a leader? What do you feel you can do to improve your communication style to make it more assertive and what steps will you take to accomplish this? Are there any disadvantages to poor communication? If so, what are they? How can this be changed? Compromising and realizing that both sides CAN “win” is the best solution.
