2 Fig 1 A system of over 20 soluble plasma and body fluid proteins comprise the complement system. Multiple substances may initiate either the classical or alternative pathways of the complement cascade, involving the activation of serine proteases and the assembly of C3 convertase, a protease on the surface of the target site. C3 is cleaved giving rise to a C3b and iC3b, bound to the target cell surface. The latter serves as the ligand for C3 receptors and binding sites for C5.
