3. I can describe Roman architecture and engineering You will need: Pencil Roman Engineering Paper Chromebook
2
Bell Work What was the best thing you learned about Rome this week?
3
Today’s Objective Students will be able to describe Roman Architecture and Engineering
4
Roman Engineering 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them
3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences.

Skill - I Do Aqueducts One of the great Roman engineering accomplishments was the aqueduct. Aqueducts were used to carry water from lakes and reservoirs to the city of Rome. Most aqueducts ran underground, but some were stunning constructions of engineering that ran above ground. The gradient, or slope, of the aqueduct had to be just right--too steep and the water would overflow, too mild a slope and the water wouldn’t flow. There were 11 different aqueducts that ran toward the city of Rome carrying nearly 300 million gallons of water daily! 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them 3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences. What did aqueducts do? How many aqueducts were there? Aqueducts were important because

What did aqueducts do? How many aqueducts were there? Aqueducts were important because Roman aqueducts were used to carry water into the city of Rome. Eleven different aqueducts carried water into the city of Rome.

Sewers Skill - I Do The Romans built public and private toilets and these are found all over the empire. These toilets had well designed drainage systems to carry away the sewage. In Rome itself there were miles of sewers that carried the waste to the river Tiber where it flowed out to sea. 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them 3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences. What did the sewers do? Where did the waste flow to? Sewers were important because Roman sewers carried the waste to the river Tiber. The sewer waste flowed out to the sea.

Sewers Skill - I Do Cloaca Maxima:
The Cloaca Maxima is one of the world’s earliest sewer systems. The name literally means greatest sewer. The Cloaca Maxima may have been originally constructed around 600 BC! 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them 3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences. What is the Cloaca Maxima? When was it originally built? Cloaca Maxima is Latin for what?

Roman Roads Skill - Independent Practice
Quality roads are essential to the maintenance of an empire. They were used first and foremost to facilitate troop movements. Roman roads were the best roads in Europe until the 1900s. The Romans constructed nearly 250,000 miles or roads, of which, nearly 50,000 were paved. Many are still in use today! Skill - Independent Practice 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them 3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences. What were Roman roads used for? How many miles of roads did the Roman’s construct? Roman roads were important because
14
Arch Skill - Independent Practice
The Romans were the first to use the arch systemically in nearly all constructions- including bridges, aqueducts, temples, and stadiums. They also used a triumphal arch to commemorate famous victories and achievements. 1.Read 2.IDENTIFY the answers by underlining them 3.Write the answer in full and complete sentences. In what did construction projects the Roman’s use the arch? The Roman arch was important because

Quick Write- Bottom of the Worksheet
After reviewing information about Roman sewers, arches, aqueducts, and roads. I want you to pick which one you think was the most important of Rome’s engineering projects. Explain to me in at least 5 sentences why you believe your choice is the most important.
