2 3.2 The Christian Church Takes shape
At start of Middle Ages, all Christians in western Europe belonged to a single church, the Roman Catholic Church. Monastery-a community of monks Monk-a man who has taken a vow to devote his life to prayer and service in a monastery. Clergy-the people who perform the sacred functions of a church. Pope-supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Seven Sacraments were the sacred rites that Christians believed would give them a special blessing from God. 1. Baptism 2. Confirmation 3. Eucharist 4. Matrimony 5. Holy Orders 6. Penance 7. Extreme Unction

4 3.4 Pilgrimages and Crusades
Pilgrimage-a journey to a holy site. Crusades-Military expeditions to the land where Jesus had lived, the Holy Land. Land was holy to Christians, Jews and Muslims.

5 During Middle Ages, most art was for religious purposes.
3.5 Art and Architecture During Middle Ages, most art was for religious purposes. Cathedrals were the most glorious expression of art and architecture. They were headed by bishops and were often the tallest buildings in towns.

6 Charlemagne established schools in monasteries, convents and churches.
3.6 Education Charlemagne established schools in monasteries, convents and churches. Natural law-concept of universal order built into nature that can guide moral thinking. University-a school of advanced learning.

7 Christmas and Easter were two of the most important medieval holidays.
Music, dancing, and food were part of medieval holidays & festivals.

8 3.8 Monks, Nuns, and Mendicants
Monasticism-Men and women withdraw from the rest of the world in order to devote themselves to their faith. Illuminated Manuscript-A handwritten book decorated with bright colors and precious metals. Monks kept knowledge of the past alive. Mendicants-Devoted their life to Christianity without the isolation.
