Biology 1-2B Inheritance

1-2b: Inheritance All human beings have 46 chromosomes in their cells
These 46 chromosomes are arranged into 23 pairs.

1-2b: Inheritance Within the 23 pairs, one member of each pair came from your mom and the other from your dad.

Flashback to Science 9! Remember when you studied sexual reproduction in Science 9 and learned about sperm cells and egg cells? A sperm cell contains 23 chromosomes An egg cell contains 23 chromosomes When these cells join during fertilization, a new cell with a complete set of 46 chromosomes is made

1-2b: Inheritance Interestingly, all of the information required to build a human being is found in the 23 chromosomes you received from each parent. This means that you actually have 2 copies of all the instructions necessary to make a human inside each of your cells!! 2 sets of instructions for hair colour, 2 sets of instructions for eye colour, etc.

1-2b: Inheritance The “instructions” that you inherited from your parents are found on the chromosomes they gave you in the form of genes.

1-2b: Inheritance So they gave you copies of instructions to make proteins. Your body then produces these proteins and the proteins are used by your cells to create a unique human being, You!

Do you look like an exact blend of your parents?
I certainly don’t!!!!

1-2b: Inheritance The cells in your body express some of the genes that you inherited from your mom and some of the genes that you inherited from your dad How they choose what genes to utilize is complicated….and our next topic in Sc. 10!
