1 HOW TO TAKE NOTES EFFECTIVELY: THE CORNELL METHOD
Tashana S. Samuel

2 HOW DO YOU TAKE MATH NOTES?

3 WHAT IS THE CORNELL METHOD?

4 Cornell Note Taking: Advantages
Keeps your notes organized so you can review and revise later Allows you to find important information easier Focuses on important concepts (e.g. theories/formulas, vocabulary words) Helps you review for exams in an organized way You can use it for any subject!

5 Let’s take some notes…

6 HEADING: COURSE TITLE, LESSON TITLE, DATE
PAPER PREP: DIVIDE PAPER INTO 4 SECTIONS

7

8 Cornell Method: Proceed with the 5 R’s
Record Reduce Reflect Recite Review

9 Record So now that the format of our notes is all done, it's time to take some notes. You'll notice above that the right side of the page is a bit wider. This is the area for the bulk of the notes. The right side is the same type of notes that you've always taken - the fast and furious scribbling of all of the information that you could get down at once. During the lecture, record in the NOTE TAKING AREA as many meaningful facts and ideas (theories, formulas, examples) as you can. Write legibly, in short phrases, and use abbreviations when you can. SO FOR NOW, JUST PUT ALL THE NOTES FOR THIS PRESENTATION IN THIS SECTION…

12 REDUCE The beauty of Cornell really is in the left side. After the notes are taken in class, you are supposed to review the notes within 24 hours and fill in the left side. In other words, you read over what you wrote on the right side in lecture, and put short reminders and cues on the left.

13 You'll notice that the above picture really looks like a traditional page of notes. You'll see where this person went back and reviewed the lecture notes to fill in the left side. The beauty of the left side, whether done at the same time or 24 hours later, is that the you don't need to read ALL of the right side scribbles in order to get the gist of the lesson. You can scan through the left side cue words to refresh your memory or to find something quickly.

15 In the summary section you are supposed to revisit your notes 24 hours later or so and write a brief summary of the notes. Even though you summarized what the professor said in the note taking area, and simplified the lecture into concepts in the cue column, this summary section ties everything together. With this summary section, think of it as a "tweet" (limiting their response to 140 characters) of the lesson, which really shows off how much you can say in just a few words. Also include any lingering questions that you may have, so you can ask your professor to clarify next class. REFLECT

18 COVER & RECITE So for the recite step, After you have finished writing the cue section, cover the right side and recite the notes based on the cues in the left column

19

20 If you don’t remember the meanings of some of the definitions, it’s okay, you can peek and recite as necessary and try again.
