Evaluating a study A very GRAVE business
3
Generalisability GRAVE
Can the findings be GENERALISED to the real world? Consider where the research was conducted. Are artifical/contrived laboratory conditions anything like the real world? (ECOLOGICAL VALIDITY) What TASK were ppts asked to do? Was it something they would do in their everyday lives? (MUNDANE REALISM) Was the sample representative of the target population? Can the findings be generalised to the target population? (Population Validity)
4
Generalisability POPULATION VALIDITY ECOLOGICAL VALIDITY
Consider where the research was conducted. Are artifical/contrived laboratory conditions anything like the real world? MUNDANE REALISM What TASK were ppts asked to do? Was it something they would do in their everyday lives? POPULATION VALIDITY Was the sample representative of the target population? Can the findings be generalised to the target population?
5
Reliability GRAVE Are the results consistent?
Was the procedure standardised so that replication is possible? Has the research been replicated?
6
Application GRAVE Is the research useful?
Are there any obvious applications? Who will benefit from the findings?
7
Validity GRAVE Does the study have INTERNAL VALIDITY?
Can you see any other possible explanation for the findings? Were extraneous variable controlled? Has the research measured what it set out to measure or has it accidentally measured something else? Does it have ecological validity? Does it have population validity?
8
Ethics GRAVE Does the research adhere to the ethical guidelines laid down by the BPS or APS? Deception? De-brief? Right to withdraw? Informed consent? Protection from harm? Privacy protected Was the researcher Competent?
9
Ethics Is the research ethical?
Does it breach any of the ethical guidelines laid down by the BPS/APS D D R I P P
