3 of 6 Primary Program Goals: 1
3 of 6 Primary Program Goals: 1.Bring awareness of Environmental Justice issues associated with coastal risk and hazards to facilitate a collaborative campus community seeking to evaluate and manage risk associated with inhabiting the coast 2.Establish a certificate and/or minor in coastal risk, management, and environmental justice 3.Develop a program of service learning projects to train students in the areas of coastal risk, management, and environmental justice

Needed to keep the ball rolling…
Project needed to be grounded in the knowledge of the resources supported by faculty and administration with the foresight to share knowledge and create opportunities for students and faculty to use their expertise to serve the community (choose team wisely)…strong Chair! crowned with the cross-College and Inter-University willingness to forge new relationships toward the betterment of the education and broader communities. Jolvan T. Morris Initially: LMRCSC SSU Post-doc Now: NOAA Fisheries Carol J. Pride Chair, Dept. Marine & Environmental Sciences

Forging the path ahead GP-IMPACT: Expanding HBCU Pathways for Geoscience Education (yr. 1 approved) PROBLEM: There is a gross underrepresentation of African Americans in the Geoscience fields NEEDS: Determine Best Practices and HBCU Curricular Capacity for Geoscience content & methods CHANGE FACTORS: STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIES: EXPECTED OUTCOMES & IMPACTS INFLUENTIAL FACTORS for SCALING Identify gaps & weaknesses in the geoscience content and pedagogy for training Af. Americans, focus on HBCUs Develop Deep Dive Evaluation & Enhancement Tool Communications Networking Faculty Engagement Institutional support Trust in the Process Identify institution-specific pathways for enhancing capacity for geoscience education Identify best pathways for interventions to attract and support Af. American students in Geosciences Deploy/Test Deep Dive Evaluation & Enhancement Tool Deployment and evaluation process for Deep Dive Tool will foster a stronger network supporting efforts to attract and support development of Af. Americans in the Geosciences Test at 3 core institutions, re-evaluate, then test at 2 additional institution ASSETS: HBCUs with existing STEM-Geoscience programs, courses, & place-based activities; HBCU Geosciences Working Group Identify & begin to address gaps in resources available to fortify efforts by HBCUs to better prepare their students to be Earth-literate Begin to address enhancement needs revealed through testing of Deep Dive Draft & begin to test mechanisms post- Deep Dive Evaluation enhancement NOTEWORTHY ASSUMPTION: HBCU pre-service teacher preparation programs lack sufficient geoscience content and pedagogy Informed by previously identified needs for action: Develop & Test Experiential Place-based Pre- & In-service Teacher Camp Readily available training opportunities for pre- and in-service teachers Derived from Kellogg Foundation Theory of Change approach
