1 Jean Piaget Cognitive Development
Cognitive Development – the way in which a child’s thinking and reasoning change and grow. There are four basic stages Sensorimotor Birth to 2 years Preoperational 2 to 7 years Concrete Operations 7-11 years Formal Operations 11 and on

2 Stage 1: Sensorimotor Birth to 2 years
Sensory: The child explores the world using the five senses: sounds, smells, tastes, etc. Motor: Initially sucking/grasping reflex and reaching for objects

3 Separation Anxiety Symptoms
Refusal to go to child care, baby sitters, or school Crying, tantrums, and being clingy Separation Anxiety is Normal and seen in every culture Starts approximately between 9-12 months

4

5 Object Permanence Object permanence
Piaget’s term for awareness that specific objects are real and exist all by themselves Babies get object permanence at about months Causes separation anxiety In this video Lucile is 6 months old.

6 Before Object Permanence

7 Stage 2: Preoperational Stage (2-7)
Children acquire language. Not capable of logical thought. Children understand that things can be permanent. Children at this age can not see things from other point of view. They don’t understand reversibility.

8 Pre-Operational Stage (2-7yrs old)
Toddler moves from world of all sensations and movements to world of thought. Understands the use of symbols and language. This is an example of symbolic thinking. I.E pretend play. May have a conversation with a rock because the child doesn’t understand it is not real and doesn’t have feelings. The world only exists in terms of himself or herself.

9 Development of... Animism - believes inanimate objects have feelings as they do. Egocentrism - can only see the world from their own point of view (Show Video)

10 Also the Development of…
Reversibility – the idea that a relationship that goes in one direction can go in the other direction also. “Do you have a brother?” “Yes.” “What’s his name?” “Jimmy.” “Does Jimmy have a brother?” “No.”

11 Concrete operatons stage (7 to 11 years)
The world for the child is fixed and real. Objects are separate and different and lie outside the child in the world. They can see someone else’s point of view. They still have problems seeing objects that have more than one dimension at the same time.

12 Concrete Operational Stage (7-11 years)
The children are now able to conserve, they understand that although the appearance has changed the thing itself does not. Show Video

13 What is CONSERVATION? “the awareness that a quantity remains the same despite a change in its appearance”

14 Formal operations Stage (11 and on)
The ability to deal with highly symbolic thoughts, math, logic, philosophy. Children suddenly become concerned about issues such as truth and justice, fairness, and personal rights.

15 Practice Quiz Which stage am I in? I have learned how to conserve.
If a toy is hidden from me I believe it no longer exists. I am capable of highly symbolic thinking. I may have a conversation with a rock because I believe it has the same feelings as me. I experience separation anxiety.

16 How did you do? 1) Concrete Operational 2) Sensorimotor
3) Formal Operations 4) Preoperational 5) Sensorimotor
