Capacity Enhancement in Data Management Friso Veenstra, 6 december 2018

The Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy Petroleum Affairs (MME), the Geological Survey of Namibia, and the national oil company NAMCOR, are all involved in managing data related to natural resources The current increase in offshore subsurface activities has led to a need to evaluate subsurface data management practices already in place and explore where optimizations are possible In the Netherlands, TNO-Geological Survey of the Netherlands (TNO) holds responsibility for all subsurface energy related activities, focusing on: Geoscience data management Mapping and geomodelling Regulatory tasks Internationally, TNO works on capacity enhancement along these lines
3
TNO is currently providing structured support to MME and NAMCOR to enhance best practices for managing geoscience data, thereby strengthening capacities in Namibia’s O&G exploration sector TNO has proposed a two-phased approach: An evaluation study of the MME NAMCOR data workflows currently in place through face-to-face interviews, resulting in a report on data workflows, connected data management issues, and recommendations Data management workshop in Windhoek in early 2019 covering the findings of the evaluation process and requirements for improvement of geoscience data management in Namibia, plus an implementation plan
4
Final observations and remarks
Open attitude and willingness to collaborate TNO providing consultancy on data management only, no hardware or software High level of activity and focus on natural resources/energy, both offshore and onshore Large incoming data sets might provide processing opportunities in Namibia
