Hematoxylin and eosin staining of (a) normal (nondiabetic) mouse and human skin, (b) mouse and human diabetic skin, and (c) delayed-healing wounds of mouse (db/db) and human (diabetic foot ulcer and venous leg ulcer). Epidermis of human skin is much thicker than that of mouse skin. On the contrary, mouse skin exhibits much denser distribution of hair follicles and much more pronounced adipose tissue. Also, note that the hyperproliferative epidermis evident in human chronic wounds (diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers) is not evident in the diabetic mouse wound. Scale bars = 500 μm.
