What is massage? Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage therapists typically use their hands and fingers for massage, but may also use their forearms, elbows and even feet. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. Types of Massage Swedish massage. This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you. Deep massage. This massage technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries. Sports massage. This is similar to Swedish massage, but it's geared toward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries. Trigger point massage. This massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.

Risks of Massage Internal bleeding Nerve damage Temporary paralysis
Allergic reactions to massage oils or lotions You might also experience muscle discomfort due to the release of lactic acid from the muscle fibers. This can easily be controlled through an increase in water intake, rest, and the use of over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol and Motrin

How to Avoid a Bad Massage Experience
Choose only locations that are well known and highly recommended Choose only massage therapists that are certified and licensed in your state (verify by asking for proof). You should always be comfortable with your therapist, if at anytime you feel that you are being treated inappropriately in any way SPEAK UP! You should always request a therapist of the sex you are most comfortable with and only dress down to where you are most comfortable; never let anyone tell you what to do with your own body or impede on your comfort level.

Disclaimer Despite its benefits, massage isn't meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Let your doctor know you're trying massage and be sure to follow any standard treatment plans you have.
