1 Warm-up Understanding the fossil record can be used by scientists in the field of: Earth Science Geology Evolution Taxonomy All of the Above Take out NEW behavior log Copy Objective, HW into assignment list

2 Practice Identify relevant information from the figure
Describe what conclusions you can make by using that information

3 Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- Sci.7.1a, L.7.4b-L.7.6, RI.7.4 * State the Purpose (Big Idea) - By understanding how fossils are made, we learn our place in life, and what our future may be SWBAT explain and draw how life evolved over time and is related to the fossil record SWBAT explain how rocks layer and change over time SWBAT predict the meaning of earth science vocabulary using Greek and Latin roots

4 Mantra Today is a great day for science because: science is power.
You are powerful because: I always make a difference.

5 Connections Friday How could you find out more about or interact with fossils or previous life? OR Local current event related to modeling, causes and effects, fossils… Tell me about a time when you saw a fossil!

6 Agenda Identify what is needed to know to revise and understand the situation in the model Evolutionary History (Using fossils) Geology and Geography Review of Root words Guided and independent practice Summary/ Parking lot feedback/ questions

7 What do we need to understand?
What knowledge should we know to understand how animals fossilize/ get buried and left behind? Environments, Grass/Soil, Weather, & Water Cycle Where/why bones are found, what happens to them Where animals live/ normal diet, animals vs. humans Fossil and animal ID and types Graves Time Scale and Dating How/where things die, extinctions/why, & decomposition (what/how long) Preservation (freezing, amber, ash, etc.) Which animals fossilize/how

8 Do-Now Which person’s theory do you agree with more? Why?
Georges Cuvier: Earth's features are mostly accounted for by violent, large-scale events that occurred in a relatively short amount of time. (Catastrophism) James Hutton: The earth is constantly changing and forming and has been for billions of years (Uniformitarianism)

9 Geology The study of solid Earth, its rocks, and how they change
Law of Original Horizontality Sedimentary rock layers, and large lava flows, are initially deposited in a horizontal or nearly horizontal orientation due to gravity (Figure 4). Therefore if rock layers appear tilted to the horizon we can assume the rocks have been moved into that position by some crustal disturbance sometime after their deposition

10 Dating rocks Law of Cross-Cutting Relationships: Carbon Dating:

11 Dating the Earth How can we date the planets? In between??
Earth billion years ago Moon bya Milky Way 13.2 bya Mars 4.5 bya In between?? The oldest life? 3.5 bya

12 Glaciation Events Name Period (Ma) Period Era Quaternary
2.58 – present Neogene Cenozoic Karoo 360 – 260 Carboniferous  and Permian Paleozoic Andean-Saharan 450 – 420 Ordovician and  Silurian Cryogenian (or Sturtian-Varangian) 850 – 635 Cryogenian Neoproterozoic Huronian 2400 – 2100 Siderian and  Rhyacian Paleoproterozoic

13 Long History of Life

14 Vendian (or Ediacaran)
Period Epoch Cenozoic Quaternary Holocene Pleistocene Tertiary Pliocene Miocene Oligocene Eocene Paleocene Mesozoic Cretaceous Jurassic Triassic Paleozoic Permian * Carboniferous Pennsylvanian Mississippian Devonian Silurian Ordovician Cambrian Precambrian Vendian (or Ediacaran) Long History of Life

15 Do-Now Describe where you live in as many different ways as possible
If you wanted to know more about the people around you, what would you do?

16 Geography The study of the lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena of Earth

17 Compare your notes! Review your vocab!
Students will compare notes taken during class and write down any missing quotes or facts that would be useful to answer how fossilization occurs Break down their meanings according to Greek and Latin Roots. Geo- -Ology -Graphy Review your vocab!

18 Summary/ questions We can draw information from figures by: _____________________________________________ Last questions… First biweekly test Tomorrow in class!

19 Optional HW David Attenborough’s “First Life”

20 Getting ready for the Biweekly!
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.4.B Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., belligerent, bellicose, rebel). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

21 GO GO FEEDBACK FRONTIER!
Miss K – In my baggie (Comments on my teaching, living up to my goals, and any personal things you need to privately tell me) Your peers – Feedback to 1 or 2 people… What is something you saw him/her do that matched up with our class values? Why was it really great to see this?

22 Paper return/ Grade Sheet Update
No. Name of Assignment Unit Name Date Points Earned 1. How Do You Know Inquiry 8/10/16 2. Community Map 8/15/16 3. Scientific Method Quiz 8/18/16 4. Biweekly Test #1 RI/RL 8/24/16
