Forces and Motion Physics Unit

Reference Point Definition: the starting point you choose to describe the location, or position, of an object (Fred Astaire Ceiling Dance Video) (visual of how he danced on the ceiling)

Position Definition: describes an object’s distance and direction from a reference point

Distance Definition: How far something travels

Displacement Definition: the difference between the initial, or starting, position and the final position IT IS THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN THE INITIAL AND FINAL POSITIONS!!!

Displacement Pythagorean Theorem

Distance and Displacement

Distance and Displacement

Practicing Displacement and Distance
Calculate the distance and displacement in each of the following situations. Include a direction (example: north or northwest) with your answer. David walks 3 km north, and then turns east and walks 4 km. Amy runs 2 miles south, then turns around and runs 3 miles north.

Practicing Displacement and Distance
Jermaine runs exactly 2 laps around a 400 meter track. Derrick crawls 4 feet south, and then turns east and crawls 6 feet. Ray runs 30 feet north, 30 feet west, and then 30 feet south.
