SEL involves acquiring and effectively applying knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to: understand and manage emotions set and achieve positive goals feel and show empathy for others establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning

3 problem solving, evaluation appreciating diversity, respect for others
The Five Competencies Self-Awareness identifying emotions, accurate self perception, recognizing strengths, sense of self-confidence, self efficacy Self-Management impulse control, stress management, self- discipline, self-motivation, goal setting, organizational skills Responsible Decision Making ethical responsibility, situation analysis, problem solving, evaluation Relationship Skills communication, social engagement, working cooperatively, resolving conflict, helping and seeking help Social Awareness perspective taking, empathy, appreciating diversity, respect for others

Can be taught and measured Research shows that children and adults with these skills do better in school and in life

Is a visual representation of: an emotion or feeling The scale simplifies emotions by assigning them a number and color. It is created for a specific individual or group.

Let’s check in: close your eyes take a few deep breaths ask yourself, “how am i feeling right now?” Emotions are always changing This too shall pass Knowing how i feel

Positive Reframing Reminding yourself that there is another way to to look at the situation or to tell the story. Putting a positive spin on the situation. Think of stressors as possibilities, challenges or opportunities Look for the humor in the situation Identify what you can control Power outage can be cozy family time A Long line can be an opportunity to talk or to breathe Gratitude journal is practice

And increase your use of healthy strategies, BUT you need to PRACTICE every chance you get! (Just think of the opportunities you have)
