1 Committee on Earth Observation Satellites
LSI-VC Co-Chairs: Bianca Hoersch (ESA), Jennifer Lacey (USGS), Adam Lewis (GA) WGCV Plenary 2017 Sioux Falls, SD 9th May 2017

2 LSI-VC Objectives The LSI-VC aims to optimize the use of existing and future land surface imaging assets and data to better meet user needs by: Promoting sustained and systematic collection of satellite-derived land surface imaging observations by sharing information on future mission development Drawing together validated requirements identified by downstream user communities to: Identify opportunities to better optimize, and increase resilience of, land surface imaging programs Identify current and potential data gaps (both in terms of geographic and temporal coverage, and in land monitoring requirements)

3 LSI-VC Objectives (cont.)
Coordinating production and distribution of, and ability to analyze, fundamental, non-domain specific, measurements derived from land surface imaging observations (e.g. surface reflectance, land surface temperature, calibrated radar backscatter [gamma and sigma nought]) Facilitating maximum utilization of land surface imaging observations through the promotion of common standards making land surface image products more easily discovered and ready for analysis

6 The definition – CARD4L CEOS Analysis Ready Data for Land (CARD4L), are satellite data that have been processed to a minimum set of requirements and organized into a form that allows immediate analysis with a minimum of additional user effort, and, interoperability both through time and with other datasets

7 CARD4L – Description document
CEOS Analysis Ready Data for Land (CARD4L) is defined in the Description Document

8 CARD4L – Description document
Preamble (1) Data preparation is a major barrier (2) There is a call for analysis ready data (3) The need is growing: data volumes are increasing; time series analyses are needed; constellations must be supported

9 CARD4L – Description document
Definition paragraph CEOS Analysis Ready Data for Land (CARD4L), are satellite data that have been processed to a minimum set of requirements and organized into a form that allows immediate analysis with a minimum of additional user effort, and, interoperability both through time and with other datasets Caveats: Agencies will also produce other products for their users.

10 CARD4L – Description document
Requirements (minimum) General metadata lineage; authoritative data Quality metadata quality flags; suitability for a particular use Corrections allow the users to use the data directly; geophysical measurement of the land surface Geometric correction accurate location; data can be ‘stacked as time-series’

11 CARD4L – Description document
Requirements (optical and radar) Optical : atmospheric and solar view angle corrections Radar: radiometric corrections for topography and incidence angle

12 Next steps – CARD4L specifications
Following endorsement of the definition, Technical Specifications will also be needed. These will be the subject of further work with oversight by the LSI-VC General Description minimum characteristics Technical Specifications specifically, what is needed for optical, radar or other datasets to be CARD4L? E.g. what is CARD4L surface reflectance? For endorsement by CEOS plenary Specifications are to follow Ongoing work, continuing development Specifications will not change the General Description

13 CARD4L – Specifications - earliest form
Materials will be developed that map CEOS agency products to the high level requirements for CARD4L. An area of focus for LSI-VC-3, March 2017 A RADAR working team will be formed to focus on ARD for radar This table illustrates the type of structure that we are thinking of Update the table. Link the spreadsheet to the requirements process that LSI-VC. We have responses from JAXA, CSA, ESA and NASA indicating willingness to participate in a SAR team to progress ARD for SAR, a call will go out including through WGCV. The work on ARD is likely to feed into further work on FDAs: There is a demand for implementations of ARD and demonstration datasets for use in FDA.

14 CARD4L Specifications Framework
Definition of CARD4L Product families with specifications Providers self-assess how well their products meet the specifications Peer review CARD4L stamp !

15 Development of Specifications
Draft Specifications have been developed for Surface Reflectance Surface Temperature Radar backscatter intensity The draft specifications documents also have a guidance section Examples of data and processing that produces CARD4L References to processes that produce analysis ready data Discussion of threshold and target levels of processing The Draft Specifications will be accepted by CEOS SIT Workshop in Sep 2017

16 This table illustrates the type of structure that we are thinking of
CARD4L - next steps Specifications – expected next steps Lock into Draft specifications for Reflectance, Temperature, Backscatter – September 2017 Draft the Product Alignment Assessment process / forms Prototype CARD4L data with CEOS agencies Capture information on the benefits of CARD4L Engage with the various ARD initiatives that are progressing Learn from them and seek feedback on CARD4L Share and promote the framework This table illustrates the type of structure that we are thinking of Update the table.
