2. Late childhood (preadolescence) – Physical 6 – 12 y/o
wt gain lbs, height 2 -3 ins / yr
Complex motor-sensory coordination
Most primary teeth are lost to permanent.
Vision is fully developed
Some begin sexual maturation.

3. Late childhood (preadolescence) – Mental 6 – 12 y/o
Increase rapidly, life centering around school
Speech, writing, and reading skills increase.
Problem solving and memory improve.
Understand abstract concepts; loyalty, morals.
Active thinking and making judgments.

4. Late childhood (preadolescence) – Emo 6 – 12 y/o
Greater independence, distinct personality
Frightened about school; need to gain self-confidence.
Emotions begin to be under control.
Later…due to sexual maturation, depression to joy, restlessness and anxiety.

5. Late childhood (preadolescence) – Social 6 – 12 y/o
Like activities they can do by themselves
more group oriented (same sex)
make friends more easily: notice the opposite sex
Dependence on parents decreases due to friends their own age.
Reassurance, parental approval, and peer acceptance.
