Mental health facts JENNIFER
Mental Health: is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment". Mental Illness: disorders generally characterized by dysregulation of mood, thought, and/or behavior, as recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Serious Mental Illness: persons who, as the result of a mental disorder, exhibit emotional, cognitive, or behavioral functioning which is so impaired as to interfere substantially with their capacity to remain in the community without supportive treatment or services of a long-term or indefinite duration. In these persons, mental disability is severe and persistent resulting in a long term limitation in their functional capacities for primary activities of daily living such as interpersonal relationships, self-care, homemaking, employment, and recreation. *Anxiety, Depression, Suicide, Self-Injury, Eating Disorder JENNIFER Wisconsin Hope Lab/U. of Michigan/Community Colleges: study at 10 community colleges across the nation reveals that half of the more than 4,000 community college students surveyed are experiencing a current or recent mental health condition. 50% of community college students are experiencing a current or recent mental health condition. Less than 50% of those impacted are receiving mental health treatment Does this information align with your experience/observation? Mental health first aid
Mental Health First Aid is a national program that teaches people how to respond to the signs of mental illness and substance use. Risk factors and warning signs How to help someone in crisis Where to turn for help Mental Illness basics Depression & Mood Disorders Anxiety Disorders Psychosis Trauma Substance Use Disorders MELISSA Example of how MHFA was offered as part of BHB at Highline - 45 participants Variety of participants (students, medical staff, security/library/ELL faculty) Train the trainer

Trauma-informed care A treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. Goals: Promote trauma awareness Avoid re-traumatization Acknowledge “problem” behaviors as understandable ways to cope Give the survivor choice and control View trauma in the context of an individual’s environment Create a safe and hopeful environment Focus on strengths to promote resilience MELISSA Applies to staff/consumers in all settings (faculty/students, nurses/patients, counselors/clients, barista/customer) Builds empathy because it considers the impact of trauma on people’s ways of interacting/communicating/functioning Understanding this promotes equity
