8 General Strategy & Description _______________ Level 1 Diagnostics

9 Level 1 Diagnostics _________________ Recipe for Calculating

10 Level 1 Diagnostics _____________ Select Plots

11 OLR Spectra Winter vs. Summer ___________ In summer the power is more Concentrated, and it occurs at a higher frequency than during winter

25 Application of MJO Diagnostics to GCMs
Undertaking a uniform application of MJO diagnostics to a number of contemporary GCMs. D. Kim has undertaken the analysis and we plan write up the results into a journal article. The GCMs and associated institution leads are: GEOS-5 - S. Schubert/M.I. Lee GFDL - W. Stern NOAA-CFS - W. Wang CSU/superparam - M. Khairoutdinov ECHAM4/OPYC - K. Sperber SNU - I.S. Kang NCAR - R. Neale

26 Complete Catalog of Level 1 and Level 2 Diagnostics

27 Accomplishments to Date
Develop MJO WG Web Site. Done, Including observed and simulation Diagnostics Link, Meeting/Telecon Updates, and Theme Pages Diagnostics for Assessing Model Simulations of the MJO. ~Done, includes codes and Eventually data sets, Journal Article in Preparation Application of Diagnostics to GCMs. ~Done for GCMs contributed by MJOWG (D. Kim/E. Maloney Presentations), IPCC analysis in progress Developing MJO Forecast Metrics/Diagnostics. ~50% Done, Basic technique established, working with NWP centers to implement a standardized procedure for calculation, presentation, and assessment (M. Wheeler Presentation). This is an activity that is endorsed by the WGNE. Experimentation Planning. Underway
