Digestive system part 2

Review… define the following words:
Peristalsis Bolus Amylase

Review… Give an example of a physical and chemical change that happens in the stomach

Review… Why did I eat chalk?

Where were we? Swallowed food (bolus) has been churned in the stomach and broken down by hydrochloric acid. Where does it go from here?

The rest of the journey Now, the food proceeds to the small intestine, then the large intestine, and out the anus. Several more chemical and physical transformations will happen along the way.

The rest of the journey The digested and acidified food from your stomach is now referred to as chyme. It’s essentially diarrhea.

Liver The liver is responsible for detoxifying anything you consume.
It secretes a substance called bile which emulsifies fats. Bile is stored and manufactured in the gallbladder.

Pancreas The pancreas secretes pancreatic juices that target remaining fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It also secretes insulin, a hormone that helps our cells take in glucose from the blood.

Small intestine This is where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Your small intestine (which is longer than the large intestine) soaks up nutrients. It has a gigantic surface area!

Villi and microvilli These are small ridges on your intestinal wall that give the small intestine such great surface area.

Large intestine Water is absorbed out in the large intestine. The leftover product is a solid piece of waste with little to no nutrients left. It’s then expelled out through the anus.
