Mouth
Teeth – mechanically break down food
Salivary glands – saliva chemically breaks down food – contains enzyme amylase to break down starch
Tongue – mixes food with saliva and pushes to the pharynx to be swallowed
Swallowing –
food passes through the pharynx
epiglottis closes over trachea
food enters esophagus

4. Components Esophagus Stomach
tube that passes food from the pharynx to the stomach
lined with smooth muscle – moves food by waves of contractions called peristalsis
Stomach
Hydrochloric acid – continue chemical digestion
Smooth muscle of stomach contracts and relaxes to continue mechanical digestion
It takes 2 – 4 hours for food to pass through the stomach to the small intestine
Chyme – lump of food that leaves the stomach

5. Components
Liver – Works to make bile. Bile is used to break down fats in the small intestine.
Gall Bladder – where bile
is stored until needed
Pancreas – secretes
enzymes to continue the
chemical digestion of food

6. Components Small Intestine Large Intestine Tube that leads from the
stomach to the large intestine
Chemical digestion finishes
Minerals and nutrients are
absorbed
It takes 3 – 6 hours for chyme to
pass through the small intestine
Large Intestine
Tube that connects the small intestine to the anus
Remaining water is absorbed from the chyme

7. Components
Anus
Opening through which waste is removed from the digestive system
It takes 24 – 72 hours for food to move through the entire digestive system
