Imperialism Document Poster Assignment
3/2/2017 Learning Objective: I can analyze primary source documents about imperialism and categorize the information. Language Objective: I can read documents, identify where they belong on a poster, and explain their importance to imperialism.
2
In the 1800s many European countries engaged in Imperialism – they gained control of weaker countries around the world. Once they had control of these weaker countries, the powerful nations utilized the raw materials and resources for industrialization, as well as, encouraged their citizens to move to these colonies to work and live. This assignment will allow you to identify the reasons for imperialism and the impact European Imperialism had on the world. You will use your textbook and provided sources to complete the prep for the poster.

PROMPTS In the 19th century, Europe expanded its involvement (whether through conflict or cooperation) with different regions around the globe. What impact did this interaction have politically, socially, and economically? What are the implications of European Imperialism? How can elements from 19 th/20th century Imperialism help us to understand the world today, or how is there a direct connection/impact?
4
Step 1: Using a large piece of paper create a chart with each of the four major areas we have studied that has been influenced by European Imperialism: Step 2: Cut, Paste, and Categorize: Cut out the documents and decide which document applies to each region. Glue/tape the documents in the appropriate columns on the paper, leaving room under each to write your analysis. India Muslim Lands (Middle East) China/Pacific Africa (Congo and Nigeria)
5
Step 3: Explain how the documents address the prompt. Example:
India Muslim Lands (Middle East) China/Pacific Africa (Congo and Nigeria) How does this document address the prompt? (If you had to use this document in a seminar, what specific line would you quote? What is the situation this document is describing that addresses the prompt?) Document A

Step 4 Now that you’ve analyzed the documents, you need to start organizing. Using a system of your choice (color coding, symbols, etc.), identify which category each document addresses: Is the document about political issues, social changes, or economic challenges? You might find that a single document might address more than one category (political, social, economic).
