The Integrated Academic training pathway for Doctors and Dentists provides a clear and flexible pathway through which junior doctors and dentists can combine research and education with a clinical career.
Based on recommendations in the report of the joint Academic Careers Subcommittee of Modernising Medical Careers and the UKCRC: Medically and dentally qualified academic staff: Recommendations for training the researchers and educators of the future.
Academic Clinical Fellowships and Clinical Lectureships – first round October 2005 in England and Wales, second round July 2006 and targeted specialties that are endangered in terms of clinical and academic capacity, and geographical gaps that were identified in the first round. A third round was launched in November 2007.
Clinical Senior Lectureships – first round launched in July 2006 and the first lectureship posts were taken up in September A second round of awards for new CSLs announced in May 2007, and a third round was launched in November 2007 with a closing date of 1 Feb Applications will be reviewed and processed by a selection panel in May 2008, and candidates will be informed of the outcome on 13 June 2008.

3. Clinical Academic Careers
Diagram illustrates the development of a new integrated clinical academic training pathway addressing the key stages of a clinician’s career, namely: Medical School; Foundation Programmes; specialist training; and consultant / GP grade. New specialist training schemes are:
Academic Clinical Fellowship:
Targeted at doctors and dentists in the early years of their specialist training, after they have completed medical school and two years of foundation training.
Posts awarded through open competition and provide funding for up to three years (or up to four years for GP academic clinical fellows), and during this time the trainee combines clinical specialty or core training with academic training.
Funding: Organisational partnerships (comprising at least one NHS or Primary Care Trust, University and Postgraduate Deanery) apply to host training programmes for ACFs or CLs.  Those that are successful receive funds through the NHS that will provide 25% of a trainee's salary to allow him or her to set aside time from clinical work to develop academic skills.
The ACF provides support for trainees to prepare an application for an externally-funded Training Fellowship or an educational programme leading to a higher degree. A PhD is the usual end goal of the Training Fellowship.
When the ACF phase is complete, the candidate can return to the clinical programme and can then continue with his or her academic development by applying for a Clinical Lectureship.
Clinical Lectureship:
Last up to four years and are for doctors and dentists with a PhD/MD (or equivalent) who already have specialist training experience.
Funding is similar to the ACFs, but 50% of the trainee’s clinical salary will be paid while they are completing the academic component.
Also supports applications to do a four-year Clinician Scientist Fellowship. The end point of the CL is the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training and a substantial piece of postdoctoral research or educational work.
Clinical Senior Lectureship:
Objective of the awards is to develop high-quality capacity and secure long-term sustainability and enhanced outcomes in research and teaching at senior lecturer level.
