1 Early Russia “Land of the Czars”

2 I. 1400s- 1600s Fierce, violent czars; used peasants as slaves.
1613: Michael Romanov becomes czar at age 17. The Romanov family would rule Russia until The longest ruling dynasty in history.

3 1689: Peter the Great became czar at age 10.
Spread feudalism (serfdom). Wanted to modernize Russia. Built city of St. Petersburg with unpaid peasant labor.

4 1762: Catherine the Great becomes Czarina.
Had her crazy husband, Peter III, assassinated. Ruthless and cruel reputation. Tried to westernize, but refused to end feudalism.

5 II. Russia in the 1800’s RIGID feudalism was still in place.
Most Russians were serfs (peasants). Czars had absolute power. The Enlightenment had little effect there. Russia did NOT industrialize. In the 1800’s, it was the same as it had been in the 1600’s!

The Last Romanovs Nicholas Romanov m. Alexandra (H) German princess and granddaughter of Queen Victoria (H) of England. Marie Olga Alexei (H) Anastasia Tatyana (H)= Hemophilia, a genetic blood disorder. Only appears in males.
