15 What we know… Atoms make up all matter.
Elements and compounds are pure. Elements are made up of one type of atom. Compounds are made up of multiple elements. Elements are metals, nonmetals, or metalloids. Elements have their own properties. Compounds have different properties than the elements that make them up.

16 I CAN… I can match an element to its symbol.
I can create a Venn diagram to compare elements and compounds. I can identify the elements that make up a compound. I can list properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

17 Familiar Compounds NaCl H2O CO2 Compound Elements Combined Table Salt
Sodium and Chlorine Water Hydrogen and Oxygen Vinegar Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen Carbon dioxide Carbon and Oxygen Baking Soda Sodium, Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen NaCl H2O CO2

18 Count the number of upper case letters in the chemical formula.
How can you tell the difference between an element and a compound…on paper? Hydrogen H Oxygen O H2O Count the number of upper case letters in the chemical formula. Water is a compound because it is made up of 2 elements.

19 During an experiment, how could you tell if a new compound has been formed?
There would be signs of a CHEMICAL CHANGE taking place… Production of heat Production of light Fizzing or Foaming Smoke present Odor change Sound Color change
