1 This ad shows a six year old dressed as a soldier with the text “He already knows what he wants to be when he grows up.” When I first saw this image I expected it to be against a country that uses child soldiers, which it indirectly was, but primarily it turns out to be a positive ad for Israel. The image of the child is a pathetic appeal to the audience, because no one wants to see a kid that is in danger. They also don’t like the idea of a child losing his innocence at that early of an age. The text, clearly created for an American audience, points out that Israel stands for all of the rights that America stands for from Women’s rights to a free economy. This text uses ethos to convince the audience that Israel is a good nation. To any good, patriotic American any country that supports American ideals, especially freedom, must be one we should support in its engagements. Logos is used next; if you support freedom in Israel, you will support freedom around the world. Why? Look to the tag line: “ISRAEL The front line of the free world.” Geographically this is technically true in the Middle East as they border their enemies directly whereas much of the “free world” doesn’t.
