The “rubbing” is caused by AIR MOVEMENT
This NEGATIVELY charges part of the cloud and POSITIVELY charges another part of the cloud

When a lightning flash happens it causes the nearby air to EXPAND and VIBRATE
This causes the sound of THUNDER that we hear
Light travels faster than sound which is why we see a flash and then hear thunder!
