1 Catcher Introduction and Conspiracies

2 Controversy! The Catcher In The Rye is considered one of the 20th century’s most popular novels- but it has been challenged over the years. It was most frequently banned in schools between 1966 and 1975.

3 About Our Author… Jerome David Salinger Born in New York in 1919
Father was Jewish Mother was Irish Catholic Relationship with dad was NOT good Salinger became a recluse

4 About Our Author… Salinger was a man of contradictions:
Ate only vegetarian/organic food, except when with his son- they’d go out for pizza together. He enjoyed his military school experiences, but portrayed it as a “hell hole” in his novel. Salinger thought that writers should never have their photographs appear with their work, but he would not have had a relationship with Joyce Maynard had he not seen her picture which appeared with her magazine article.

5 About Our Author… Salinger was a man of conflicts:
His dad wanted him to take over the family business: importing and processing meat and cheese (yum). He had a conflict of social status due to the mixed background he had- being half Jewish and half Catholic. He entered the war with affection and support for the military- until he saw 50 fellow soldiers die in one day right in front of his eyes!

6 Is Catcher an autobiography?
There are LOTS of similarities between Salinger and our main character, Holden: Salinger lived on Manhattan’s Upper West Side Holden lived on Manhattan’s Upper West Side Salinger attended a military school in Pennsylvania Holden attended a military school in Pennsylvania Salinger flunked out of a few private schools Holden flunked out of a few private schools Salinger was the manager of the fencing team Holden was the manager of the fencing team

7 …and a couple more things:
Salinger briefly attended NYU where he “didn’t apply himself”. Later, he attended Ursinus College- he was proud it was not an Ivy League school. Salinger had a strong dislike of Ivy League snobbery.
