“The-best-of-2-worlds philosophy: developing local dismantling and global infrastructure network for sustainable e-waste treatment in emerging economies” Shweta Basu,
2
Best-of-2-worlds philosophy
Provides a network and pragmatic solution for e-waste treatment in emerging economies. It seeks the technical and logistic integration of ‘best’ pre-processing in developing countries to manually dismantle e-waste and ‘best’ end-processing to treat hazardous and complex fractions in international state-of-art end-processing facilities.
4
Stages of e-waste treatment chain
Stage 0 (Collection) Stage 1 (Toxic Removal) Stage 2 (Pre-processing) Stage 3 (End-processing)
5
Diversity of e-waste treatment chain: case study of gold recovery from computer
6
Comparative scenarios and evaluation methods
7
Results:
8
Economic distribution along treatment chain:
Pre processing profit= revenues from selling the liberated scrap – fixed and operational cost End processing profit= revenues from the recycled materials – purchase cost of secondary scrap, fixed and operational.
9
Eco-efficiency scores under th Bo@W recycling approach:
The material composition of products has direct influence on its profitability and environmental impact occurred during the same treatment processes. Products containing substantial amounts of metals have higher eco-efficiency scores than products dominant in plastics or other low value materials.
10
Market prices of resources and labour costs:
11
Conclusion Bo2W philosophy is novel to provide an alternative of conventional approaches adopted in e-waste management. It is more pragmatic and economic compared to the construction of a comprehensive recycling chain with all necessary pre-processing and en-processing facilities available locally.
