Figure 1 Two pathways of C>T mutation in gastric cancer. (Above arrow) Activation-induced deamination (AID) removes the amino group of cytosine turning it into uracil. (Below arrow) Cytosine methylation induced deamination. The binding of a methyl group to the 5-carbon position of the cytosine ring results in 5-methylcytosine. A 5-methylcytosine spontaneously deaminates into an uracil. The uracil is replaced by a thymine after DNA replication.
