CsCl density gradients from gastric mucosa from (A and B) an Leb-positive individual (sample 4) and (C and D) an Leb-negative individual (sample 2). The samples were analyzed for density (♢), MUC5AC (▴), MUC6 (▵) (A and C), and adherence to bacterial strains CCUG17875 (●) and CCUG17874 (○) (B and D). Strain P466 showed a similar binding pattern as that of strain CCUG17875, whereas strains MO19, P1, P1-140, and and the babA1A2 mutant behaved similarly to strain CCUG17874.

Mucin subunits were subjected to anion-exchange chromatography on a Mono Q HR5/5 column. The nominal gradient is indicated by a solid line. Fractions were analyzed for carbohydrate (♦) and Leb (2-25LE) (■) (A, D, and G) MUC5AC (LUM5-1) (▴) and MUC6 (LUM6-3) (▵) (B, E, and H), and strains CCUG17875 (●), p466 (▾), and CCUG17874 (○) (C, F, and I). Strains MO19, P1, P1-140, 26695, and babA1A2 showed a similar binding pattern as CCUG17874 (data not shown).
