1 View of Earth from TOP Gravitational forces have locked the Moon into a synchronous rotation with Earth.  The Moon is Earths’ natural satellite As a result, the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth.

2 Earth is a satellite of the _____________.
v CFU! Earth is a satellite of the _____________. The moon is a satellite of ______________. Satellite - body that orbits another body of greater mass

3 Why does the moon look different?
Page 11 As the moon revolves around the Earth, it appears to change shape. This is a result of how much light is illuminating the moon at that particular time. The moon cycles through 8 phases as it orbits the Earth. It takes 29.5 days to complete all 8 cycles. This is called a synodic month.

4 What are the phases of the moon?
1 2 New moon Waxing crescent 1st quarter Waxing gibbous Full moon Waning gibbous 3rd quarter Waning crescent 3 HINT: Waning sounds like draining (getting smaller) 4 5 6 7 8

5 Easy way to remember Waxing and Waning

6 These pictures were taken in the same location but at different times of day.
What is the difference? How does the moon affect Earth? High Tide Low Tide

7 Are tides the same thing as waves?
NO!!!!!!! Waves are caused by wind transferring its energy to the water Tides are caused by… the moons gravitational pull on the Earth the changing positions of the moon and sun relative to the earth

8 What are NEAP TIDES? Neap tides occur twice a month
Occur when Moon and Earth are at a right angle with the sun Smallest change between high and low tide

9 DRAW THIS!! Neap tide diagrams are more angular like the letter ‘N’.
EARTH N

10 What are Spring Tides? occur twice a month
Occur when Moon, Earth and Sun are in a straight line Largest change between high and low tide Highest high tide, lowest low tide

11 DRAW THIS!! Neap tide diagrams show the earth moon and sun in a straight light. Spring Straight

12 CFU! What phases of the moon do Neap tides occur during?

13 CFU! What phases of the moon do Spring tides occur during?

14 eclipses Page 11 How does the moon affect Earth? SOLAR ECLIPSE
(during the day) LUNAR ECLIPSE (during the night) A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun.
