Chapter 2.1 Key Terms and People
Leif Eriksson: was the first European (Viking) to arrive in America. He left Norway hoping to settle in Greenland, but strong winds blew him off course into present-day Canada. His settlement was constantly attacked by Native Americans. This made the Vikings leave North America. Henry the Navigator: Prince of Portugal. Responsible for greatly advancing exploration and navigation which helped Europeans explore the world – for example, he built an observatory and a school for navigation. He actually never explored the world, but paid for other people to explore. Astrolabe – a device that enabled navigators to learn their ship’s location by charting the position of the stars. Caravel – ships that used triangular sails. Unlike traditional square sails, triangular sails allowed caravels to sail against the wind.
