ADDITIONAL PERCEPTION NOTES

TYPES OF PERCEPTION Accurate perceptions these increase knowledge of ourselves, our objectives, and other people. Inaccurate perceptions these blow things out of proportion, make a problem greater than it is, and helps us to become our own worst enemy.

PERCEPTION OF AN AUDIENCE
Research shows that most audiences are unaware of a speaker’s nervousness. Audiences will forgive or ignore any type of mistake if they feel you are genuinely interested in them and genuinely trying to share with them.

PERCEPTION OF A SPEECH A speech is not a performance. It is an opportunity to say something meaningful to others, to share something you consider valuable (your message).

Confidence What it is – Confidence is a the feeling you have when you believe that you are capable of handling a situation successfully.

Confidence Why it happens – The attitude is a result of ongoing preparation and practice. It is also part of self-esteem.

Confidence What it isn’t – Confidence is not a trait that you are born with . It is a trait anyone can develop.

FEAR What it is – Fear is a biological process by which humans (and all animals) secure the necessary energy to do a job that really matters – - one that might potentially result in physical and/or psychological injury.

FEAR Phobia – A persistent, irrational fear.
