Genesis 12:1-9 – “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and

the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.”

I. Abraham’s Obedience – vs.1,4-5 A. Abraham’s Call Involved His Separation – v.1 God called Abraham to separate himself from anything that would hinder his walk of faith Reason: Strong idolatrous influence II Corinthians 6:17 – “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.”

The Darkness Opposed Him – v.6 Abraham was headed for hostile territory John 16:33 – “These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” II Timothy 3:12 – “Yea, and all that live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

The Darkness Opposed Him – v.6 Abraham was headed for hostile territory I Corinthians 15:58 – “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

II. Abraham’s Opposition – vs.4-6 A. The Days Opposed Him – v.4 B. The Darkness Opposed Him – v.6 C. The Distance Opposed Him – vs.5-6 From Haran to Beersheba in south Canaan was about 500 miles Galatians 6:9 – “And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

The Duties Opposed Him – v.5 He had Sarai and his nephew Lot to look after, along with servants, flocks, and herds Philippians 4:19 – “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

III. Abraham’s Opportunities – vs.7-9 A. To Experience God’s Promises – v.7 God had promised to him and his children the land of Canaan Ephesians 1:3 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

III. Abraham’s Opportunities – vs.7-9 A. To Experience God’s Promises – v.7 B. To Enjoy God’s Presence 1. In his worship Whenever Abraham pitched his tent he also built an altar John 4:23,24 – “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

III. Abraham’s Opportunities – vs.7-9 A. To Experience God’s Promises – v.7 B. To Enjoy God’s Presence 1. In his worship 2. In his wanderings As Abraham traveled he enjoyed sweet communion with God Hebrews 13:5 – “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee”

III. Abraham’s Opportunities – vs.7-9 A. To Experience God’s Promises – v.7 B. To Enjoy God’s Presence 1. In his worship 2. In his wanderings 3. In his ways Bethel means “House of God” Hai means “Heap of ruins” As Abraham traveled: Moving away from the house of ruins towards the house of God. II Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold all things are become new.”

Colossians 3:1-3 – “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things of the earth!”
