Sentence Structure #2 A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses properly joined together. The football game was over, but the team stayed to celebrate. Steve never studied for his test, so he failed with a 50.

Simple or compound? The student studied for the test, so he passed the class. The student studied for the test and passed the class. The boy and the girl studied for the test, so they passed the class. The boy and the girl studied for the test and passed the class.

Simple vs compound What to look for:
look for coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) linking clauses together. look for semicolons linking clauses together. look for little simple sentences hiding within the larger sentence. look for separate subject/verb pairs, not one subject with many verbs, or many subjects with one verb.

Let’s practice! Simple #1 compound #2
Football is a good game, but I prefer basketball. The bull pawed the ground, lowered his head, and charged. Firefighters and volunteers battled the forest fire together. The directions were clearly marked, but we still got lost. The surface should be clean, or the paint will not stick. Whales and porpoises are mammals, but sharks are considered fish. We chose one way; they chose another. The vibrations from the jet caused the vase to fall and crack.
