You will see a number of images that you have likely seen dozens if not hundreds of times over your life. As we scroll through just think about them without blurting out preferences or personal opinions

7 Critical Discussion Whether you like the above films or not is not the focus, what you want to discuss with your partner/group is: These posters are linked based on… These sources might be important (or at least known)to your future children because… The Schools of Thought that can be used in discussing these films are… If one doesn’t like these films they are still part of the consumer ‘process’ because…

Is something that is important to a society/culture, and can even explain it (Sym. Int) Can rise and fall quickly, but is modified or replaced

12 Characteristics of a Cultural Phenomenon
#1 – It is Observable This means that the occurrence is something that we see in everyday life We do not have to like it for it to be culturally observable

13 #2 – It is something we can Participate in
We can actively take part or watch from afar We are participating if we actively dislike something This can occur in our free time, as a hobby, as academic study, through our purchases, etc.

14 #3 – The occurrence is something that explains our Collective Understanding
It refers to the meaning and practices of everyday life and is reflection of societal norms Can be explained through the Social Sciences, Law, Economics, History, etc.

15 Smartphone Article Write the title of the article in your notes.
Make a 3-column chart. What evidence from the article suggests that smartphones have all 3 elements of a cultural phenomenon? (use your chart) How are smartphones going beyond reflecting culture and are truly changing culture? Use specific evidence from the article to support your own ideas. Is there any evidence or reason to think that it isn’t (it’s just a phone, right?)
